About Atherton/Bennett/Burton/Hepworth/Southern
This is my attempt to put down a family tree for future generations so that they will know a little bit more about our family. A sort of Internet Family Bible, if you like.
I am particularly including anecdotes about things that I have been told by my mother and father and other people whilst they were alive. I also hope that the photos I am putting on will not fade, as they are being unearthed from boxes that have not been looked in for years.
This is an absorbing subject and I intend to keep adding things as I find out about them.
At this point I must thank the various people that I have made friends with via the internet and for all the information that they have been able to give me. Where possible I have given credit for the information on the particular persons sheet, but if I have missed anybody off, thanks very much anyway.
 Atherton Family
Seem to have originated from The Fens, tracked them down to 1841 in Huntingdonshire/Cambridgeshire border. Outwell and Ramsey area. Thomas Atherton was a Market Gardener at Outwell. Robert Atherton traversed the Country and according to 1881 census his eldest son was born in Nottingham then they had 2 daughters and 2 sons born in Darlington, before returning to Nottingham for the birth of another daughter and then Alfred (Mick's grandad) was born in Collingham, and the youngest born in Nottingham again. Alfred became a General Foreman for John Cawley of Nottingham and was in charge of building Nottingham University and was presented to King George V on it's Official Opening in 1928.

Bennett Family.
Not got very far with my own relations. Samuel was my Grandfather and he was born in Brierley Hill according to 1881/1901 census. His father was also called Samuel and was born in Worcestershire, and married Mary Ann Stains. They had 4 children and Samuel was the 2nd youngest.Thomas, Hannah being elder and then Alfred was the youngest.
They had moved to Kirkby in Ashfield by 1881 but by this time, Samuel the elder is not mentioned, although Ann states that she is 'married' but by 1891 she states she is 'widowed'. A mystery. My Grandfather was a cabinet maker and my father took over his business when he had to retire early through ill health.
My grandfather and grandmother are buried in an unmarked grave at Carlton Hill Cemetery. Grave No.185 Section H6 D. Buried 6th October 1934 aged 72 Samuel and Ellen 3lst August 1949 aged 85. Ellen Bennett lived with my Mum and Dad at 85 Hungerhill Road until she died after being knocked down by a dog whilst she was fetching in the Milk.

It should be noted here that the Stephen Bennett who married our daughter Carole has no connection with my Bennett family (his originates in the Lancashire area) but it is a very nice coincidence that my daughter now carries my Maiden name.

Hepworth Family
This family have been very helpful and never moved far from Sutton in Ashfield and Shirebrook, Notts.
There is a memorial in Sutton in Ashfield Cemetery to 2 members Douglas (my grandfather's youngest brother) Hepworth and J.J.Hepworth (cousins) who died in the 1st world war in France. The family owned several shops in Sutton mainly Tailors and Butchers. My grandfather, Edwin (known by his 2nd christian name Wells) did not mix with his family after he lost his money in the depression and was forced to stand markets as an Herbalist. My mother was born in Shirebrook and they had a chauffeur and other servants but by the time she was 8 they had moved to Arnold and lived at 10 West Street, Arnold. running a Tailors shop at the corner of West Street.

Burton Family
These again have been helpful in so far as they kept the Devonshire Arms at Langwith Junction for many generations. Maria (nee Stubbings) was a great Character, she was born in Tealby, Lincs and moved I reckon at the age of 16+ to Langwith where she rose to be a lady of great standing in the community. She lived some 30 years after the death of her husband and became the first Postmistress of Langwith Junction, after having a Post Office and a block of terraced houses built there.
The Devonshire Arms was sold in the 1960's to The Mansfield Brewery by Bernard Burton when he moved to Bridlington and bought an Hotel.

Southern Family
This is a very interesting family on my husband's side. Originally from Woodborough at the turn of the 1800's they moved to Radford and became coal merchants. At some point George Southern met Zipporah Bye who was born in Canada USA (They married in Nottingham England 13th Feb.1855) Still trying to ascertain whether he went to USA and came back or vice versa. I have tracked down Bye's in Scarborough, which is where Mick's Mum believes they came from. All Jewish sounding Christian names, 2 Abrahams, 2 Zipporahs, 2 Lissimans, 2 Mahalah's etc.
